What Is A Domain Name? | www ... - Online Success Path

Word Wide WebMost of you probably already know what a domain name is, but I don?t want to make assumptions as to what everyone knows at this point, so I?m going to assume that we will have some complete beginners here.? And that?s quite all right to be a beginner.? Everyone must start at the beginning.

I?ll share with you information about a domain name ? what it is, how to choose a domain name, and where to get one.? A domain is one of the required elements of a website.

A domain name is the address of a website ? such as yoursite.com ? it?s like a house address and represents the address of your home on the World Wide Web.? Your domain name is the way in which people can find your website.? For example, the domain of the site you are on right now is onlinesuccesspath.com.

The Internet will automatically assume it needs to add http:// in front of a domain name that you type into a browser.? So when you type in www. followed by a domain name, you may notice that your web browser displays it as http://www.yoursite.com.? You don?t have to literally type in the http://, as the browser will insert that by default.

Either way, whether you see this automatically included in your web browser or not, whatever browser you are using (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer) will assume the protocol is http:// followed by the www address you have typed in.? You simply type in www. followed by the site name you want to view.

Http stands for Hypter Text Transfer Protocol, and it is the way in which browsers and web servers exchange data, allowing you to surf the web and find what you are looking for.

web home page nameYour domain represents the ?home? page of your website, but as you add new pages to your site, the URL structure will change to reflect where to find a particular page on your site within the internet.? For example, a URL could look like this:? www.yoursite.com/articles/gardening.html.

URL stands for ?Uniform Resource Locator.? In the example above, we see the home page of the website as www.yoursitename.com.??The domain is yoursitename.com.? We also see a folder called ?articles? which is being used to house articles for that site.? We see a gardening article from the ?articles? folder called gardening.html.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.? This is simply computer code.? It?s the language used to write content on the Web.? But not to worry ? as we get into web editors, you?ll see how your editor will take care of the special coding for you.? So there won?t be a lot that you?ll have to know about this computer language when you get ready to build your website pages.

A URL consists of various sections (including the domain name) that, when combined, will point to a specific page of a website. Obviously, there will be more than just a home page with the domain name for a website ? unless one is simply using a one-page website, also referred to as a squeeze page.

A website can consist of as many pages as your hosting account will support in terms of the web space that your combined pages utilize.? In today?s times, even a small hosting package will almost always support as many pages as you need.

divider

dot com extensionWhen choosing a domain name, you?ll also pick an extension to go with that name ? such as .com (the most popular extension).?

Here are just a few types of domain name extensions ? but keep in mind that for business purposes, you can?t go wrong with a .com extension.? The reason is that it?s the first extension that comes to mind when people type in a domain in their web browser.

.com ? Stands for ?commercial? and is the most widely used extension.? Businesses generally prefer a .com domain because it?s the most highly recognized symbol for an online presence.

.net ? Stands for ?network? and is commonly used by Internet service providers, web hosting companies, or other businesses that are involved in the infrastructure of the Internet.? Some businesses may choose this extension for intranet websites.

.org ? Stands for ?organization? and is primary used by non-profit organizations.

.biz ? Stands for ?business? and is used for small business sites in some cases (However, the .com choice is still the preferred option for a business, regardless of the size of that business.)

.info ? Stands for ?information? and is used for credible resources on the web which provide information.

.tv ? Stands for ?television? and is used in the entertainment or media industries.

.edu ? Stands for ?education? and is limited to educational institutions such as colleges and universities or other accredited schools.

.gov ? Stands for ?government? and is limited to government agencies in the U.S.

You can explore other domain extensions at Wikipedia.

In the next post, I?ll cover tips for choosing a domain name . . . followed by where to purchase your domain.

Mexico's Pena Nieto hounded online by youth groups

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Long before the Mexican presidential election officially began, front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto recruited an army of supporters on the Internet that dwarfed those of his rivals.

But with less than three weeks to go before the July 1 vote, some of the fiercest resistance to his candidacy is being waged online.

Organizing on the Web, young activists have launched protests against Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century despite accusations of corruption and violent repression of dissent.

Taking power in 1929, the PRI was ousted by the conservative National Action Party (PAN) in 2000 and has pinned its hopes of a return to office on the telegenic Pena Nieto, 45.

Marketed as the new face of the party, Pena Nieto set out to connect with first-time voters - around a sixth of the electorate - who have fewer memories of the PRI's past.

When Pena Nieto stood down as governor of the State of Mexico in September, he had more fans on Facebook than the other main presidential hopefuls and President Felipe Calderon combined. Even today, he still has six times as many followers as his closest rival, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

However, the sudden anti-Pena Nieto movement contends the centrist PRI is still dominated by the party's old guard, often working closely with Mexico's most powerful broadcasters.

The dissent has chipped away at Pena Nieto's support among young voters and breathed new life into the campaign of Lopez Obrador, who narrowly lost the last election in 2006.

Most pollsters say Pena Nieto has a double-digit lead and predict he will win, especially after he emerged from a final televised debate on Sunday largely unscathed. Around a fifth of voters are still undecided in most polls.

Nevertheless, in just over a month, support for Pena Nieto among 18- to 29-year-olds has slipped by 9 percentage points and jumped by nearly the same amount for Lopez Obrador, according to the Consulta Mitofsky polling firm.

"Even if Pena Nieto wins, at least he'll know it won't be as easy for him as it always was," said Gonzalo Ochoa, 36, one of tens of thousands at an anti-PRI march on Sunday in Mexico City.

A victorious Pena Nieto could face trouble in government if the groups mobilizing against him keep up the pressure.

"We are first working toward July 1 but also developing an agenda for after. Everyone is fired up," said Ivan Hernandez, a protest organizer in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-biggest city.

REAL SOCIAL NETWORK

The buzz began last month when a crowd of students at Mexico City's private Ibero-American university heckled Pena Nieto and made videos of his uncertain reaction, then posted them online.

One grainy cell phone clip from the event showing the usually composed candidate looking worried and trying to escape the protest has been viewed nearly a million times on YouTube.

His campaign suggested the hecklers weren't really students, prompting 131 people to hold up their university cards in a video, giving birth to the movement "Yo soy 132" or "I am 132."

Foremost among the anti-PRI groups, "Yo soy 132" helped push for the last presidential debate to be broadcast on more national channels after the first face-off had to compete with a top-flight soccer match and a popular variety show for air time.

Just before the Ibero protest, 38 percent of voters had a positive impression of Pena Nieto and only 18 percent had a negative one. The same pollster, Mitofsky, reported this week that the gap has narrowed to 35 percent to 25 percent.

The scale of the anti-Pena Nieto movement is restricted by low Internet coverage in Mexico, where more than half the population lives in poverty. Only 36 percent of Mexicans are online, compared to 77 percent of U.S. households.

But usage is growing fast, rising by 14 percent last year.

Communications student Alejandro Gomez said it will take word of mouth to get the message off-line and onto the street.

"Even if everyone doesn't have the Internet, the information comes from there. I find out about it and tell my mom and she tells her neighbor who doesn't have a computer," said Gomez, 21.

The reaction has spurred other acts of defiance against the PRI candidate, taking the shine off his slick campaign.

This week, Internet activist group Anonymous Hispano posted personal details of Pena Nieto online including what it claimed were his phone numbers. On Tuesday, a crowd ran after his convoy in Puebla state, heckling him and hitting his car.

Pena Nieto has responded by saying he welcomes differences of opinion, but a parallel backlash against Mexico's two main broadcasters has helped to add fuel to the flames of protest.

Televisa and rival TV Azteca control 95 percent of the television market, and there has long been suspicion that they have taken money to support powerful politicians.

An article last week by British newspaper The Guardian included documents that appeared to show Televisa sought to raise Pena Nieto's profile and discredit Lopez Obrador in 2006 has created a buzz in Mexican online social media.

The enthusiasm for taking on Pena Nieto has spawned other movements looking to replicate the media impact of "Yo soy 132". But therein may also lie a problem for the opposition.

"On social networks it is various choruses competing for who can be louder," said Jose Carreno, a Mexican media expert. "The problem is they end up neutralizing each other."

New doping charges for Lance Armstrong

Federal prosecutors chose not to pursue a case against the cycling champion earlier this year, but now the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has filed a formal accusation. ?If he's found to have used performance enhancers, he could be banned from sports and have to return his medals.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has filed formal charges against the seven-time Tour de France winner, threatening to strip him of his victories in cycling's most prestigious road race.

Armstrong, who forcefully denied the accusations, could face a lifetime ban from the sport if he is found to have used performance-enhancing drugs. The move by USADA immediately bans him from competing in triathlons, which he turned to after he retired from cycling last year.

Armstrong?has been dogged by doping allegations since his first Tour victory in 1999, but had hoped his fight to be viewed as a clean champion was finally won after U.S. federal prosecutors closed a two-year criminal probe in February without bringing any charges.?Armstrong?has said the investigation took a heavy emotional toll and he was relieved when it ended.

But USADA officials insisted they would continue to pursue their own probe into?Armstrong?and his former teams and doctors, and notified him of the charges in a 15-page letter on Tuesday. Unlike federal prosecutors, USADA isn't burdened by proving a crime occurred, just that there was use of performance-enhancing drugs.

In its letter, USADA said its investigation included evidence dating back to 1996. It also included the new charge that?Armstrong?blood samples taken in 2009 and 2010 are "fully consistent with blood manipulation including EPO use and/or blood transfusions."?Armstrong?came out of his first retirement to race in the Tour de France those two years.

Armstrong, who was in France while training for a triathlon, issued a statement dismissing the latest allegations "baseless" and "motivated by spite." Even though he last won the Tour seven years ago, the 40-year-old?Armstrong?remains a popular ? if polarizing ? figure, partly because of his charity work for cancer patients.

USADA's letter also said the agency was bringing doping charges against Johan Bruyneel, manager of?Armstrong's?winning teams; team doctors Pedro Celaya and Luis Garcia del Moral; team trainer Pepe Marti, and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari.

The USADA letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, accuses?Armstrong?of using and promoting the use of the blood booster EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone, human growth hormone and anti-inflammatory steroids. The letter doesn't cite specific examples, but says the charges are based on evidence gathered in an investigation of?Armstrong's?teams, including interviews with witnesses who aren't named.

Cycling's governing body, the International Cycling Union, which collected the 2009 and 2010 samples cited in the USADA letter, said it was not involved in the anti-doping group's investigation.

According to USADA's letter, more than 10 cyclists as well as team employees will testify they either saw?Armstrong?dope or heard him tell them he used EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone and cortisone from 1996 to 2005.?Armstrong?won the Tour de France every year from 1999-2005.

During their investigation, federal prosecutors subpoenaed?Armstrong?supporters and ex-teammates to testify in Los Angeles. One of the most serious accusations came during a "60 Minutes" interview when former teammate Tyler Hamilton said he saw?Armstrong?use EPO during the 1999 Tour de France and in preparation for the 2000 and 2001 tours.

Early in the criminal investigation,?Armstrong?attorney's accused USADA of offering cyclists a "sweetheart deal" if they testify or provide evidence againstArmstrong.

In a letter to USADA last week,?Armstrong?attorney Robert Luskin noted that USADA Chief Executive Officer Travis Tygart participated in witness interviews with federal investigator Jeff Novitzky during the criminal probe.

"It is a vendetta, which has nothing to do with learning the truth and everything to do with settling a score and garnering publicity at Lance's expense," Luskin wrote.

In a statement, Tygart said, "USADA only initiates matters supported by the evidence. We do not choose whether or not we do our job based on outside pressures, intimidation or for any reason other than the evidence."

Armstrong?has until June 29 to file a written response to the charges. The case could ultimately go before an arbitration panel to consider evidence. The USADA letter said in that case a hearing should be expected by November.

Armstrong, maintained his innocence, saying in his statement: "I have never doped, and, unlike many of my accusers, I have competed as an endurance athlete for 25 years with no spike in performance, passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one. ...

"Any fair consideration of these allegations has and will continue to vindicate me."
